Celebrate National Employee Well-Being Month this June at Mason

June is National Employee Well-Being Month throughout the United States, and Mason is a great place to celebrate because of our commitment to being a well-being university. Faculty and staff can take advantage of a variety of resources from Human Resources and Payroll that are designed to strengthen different dimensions of well-being. Those many resources include:

  • A new workout that can be done right at your desk: This innovative workout choreographed by Mason’s School of Dance is called Mason Moves. Even when you can’t leave your desk, you can still fit some exercise and fun into your workday to recharge your energy. Follow this video to learn the workout moves: http://bit.ly/2s9BjHp
  • Support for eating well this summer: Eating a nutritious diet on campus this summer is practical with all the healthy options that Mason Dining offers. So many different fruits and vegetables are in season during the summer that there are bound to be some you’ll enjoy. If you’re trying to lose weight, you can find support every Friday at the Weight Watchers at Work meetings in Merten Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.: http://hr.gmu.edu/learning/weightwatchers.php
  • A map of indoor walks around the Fairfax campus: Summer can be a good time to walk around outside – but it can also bring excessive heat and thunderstorms, which make exercising outdoors challenging. You can get a good walk no matter what the weather is like by following the Mason Walk 'In routes, which are each about one mile long and map out specific directions around buildings such as academic buildings, the Johnson Center, Center for the Arts, and EagleBank Arena.   • Guided outdoor walks on Wednesdays on the Fairfax, Arlington, and SciTech campuses: Join a “Who’s Walking Wednesdays” 30-minute walk each Wednesday at noon, led by a Mason faculty or staff member. Check out walk details (and sign up to lead a walk, if you like) for Mason’s three Northern Virginia campuses: Fairfax, Arlington, and SciTech.
  • A map of places you can take a break in nature on the Fairfax campus: When the weather is good, summer is lovely time to enjoy a workday break at Mason’s courtyards, benches, and picnic tables. Have lunch with coworkers outside or simply recharge your energy for a few minutes outside.   • A free course to help you stop smoking: Find the support you need to break free of smoking in the Dimensions Tobacco Free course, a 6-week physical well-being program sponsored by the Student Support and Advocacy Center, Human Resources and Payroll, and the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board. The course, which is designed for people who want to gain and maintain tobacco-free lives, is free and open to all Mason faculty, staff, and students as well as anyone from our local community.  It will take place at noon on Tuesdays from June 13 through July 25 (with no class the week of July 3).
  • Employee discounts to membership at Mason’s recreation and fitness centers: Swim, lift weights, dance in a Zumba class, build strength in a martial arts class, and much more at one of Mason Recreation’s centers.   • Support groups for caregivers and working parents: Reduce your stress through support at a group for Mason employees who are navigating similar issues. Mason offers an adult caregiving support group for those caring for family members like spouses or parents who have health conditions, as well as a group for working moms and one for working dads.
  • Flexible work plans: This summer, many Mason employees can develop plans with their managers to work flexibly through Flexible Summer @ Mason. Discuss what hours and locations may be best for you in a conversation with your supervisor. Learn more here: http://flexwork.gmu.edu/

“What is so rare as a day in June?” American poet James Russell Lowell famously wrote. “Then, if ever, come perfect days.” Why not take advantage of all the opportunities this month presents to invest in your well-being at Mason?
