International Symposium on the Well-Being University

June 2-5, 2016

Borba, Portugal

The first International Symposium on the Well-Being University will be held June 2-5, 2016 in Borba, Portugal.  This by-invitation-only symposium is being co-sponsored by the Center for the Advancement of Well-Being at George Mason University, the Executive Masters’ Program in Applied Positive Psychology and the Platform for Public Happiness at the School of Social and Political Sciences (ISCSP) and the Center for Administration and Public Policies (CAPP) at the University of Lisbon. The event will take place in a private 16th century villa adjacent to the town of Borba in eastern Portugal near the Spanish border and in a 17th century monastery owned by the Borba Municipality, which is also a sponsor.

The symposium will provide a forum for the exchange of ideas of university faculty members, administrators, and other university leaders who are interested in strategies for enhancing the well-being of all members of their university communities—students, faculty members, and staff.  The symposium will be a first step toward developing a global agenda for the advancement of well-being in higher education.

In addition to representatives from George Mason, participants in the symposium will include representatives from universities in the United States, Mexico, Argentina, Portugal, Hungary, Lithuania, South Africa, and New Zealand. The symposium is a possible prelude to a larger international conference a few years in the future.

George Mason University has officially included the goal of enhancing the well-being of the members of its community as part of its ten-year plan.  The Well-Being University Initiative has become the major focus of activities for the Center for the Advancement of Well-Being.  You can learn more about both the Center and the Well-Being University Initiative at http://wellbeing.gmu.edu.
