Center Senior Scholar Dr. James Maddux recently returned from a visit to Lithuania, where he attended and presented at a conference on Innovations in Mental Health Care Services that was sponsored by the Lithuanian Ministry of Health and held in the capital city of Vilnius on September 21.
Maddux's talk dealt with the ways in which traditional approaches to delivering mental health care services are inadequate to meet the mental health needs of modern society in general, and Lithuania in particular. He offered suggestions for changes that would make mental health care in Lithuania more accessible and more affordable.
The day after the conference he met with several directors in the Ministry of Health to discuss these ideas in greater detail. Maddux then traveled to the city of Klaipeda for a week to teach cognitive-behavioral therapy in the master's program in counseling psychology at Klaipeda University. This is the fifth year he has taught in that program.
