The WBU Reading Group is back, and we hope you will join us for this discussion of Kelly McGonigal's new book, The Joy of Movement: How Exercise Helps Us Find Happiness, Hope, Connection, and Courage.
If the book claims we can "harness the power of movement to create happiness, meaning, and connection," then how can we do that in the work environment where we spend so much of our time? A book group is a great strategy! And while 90 minutes of exercise each week enhances our ability to learn, be productive, and handle stress, just 30 seconds of movement can make a difference. According to sports scientist Jack Groppel, “Interspersing short movements and exercises throughout the workday can boost employee energy, engagement and efficiency.” In other words, feel good about your decision to participate in this group, as both the science around movement found in the book and the social element of coming together in this group could have beneficial effects on your work.
We will meet from 12-12:45 for five consecutive Thursdays beginning March 19 and ending April 16 (March 19, March 26, April 2, April 9, April 16). Each session will begin with a short movement practice and our final session will include a campus walk. This might seem like a big commitment but the opportunity to step away from your desk and step into an engaged community for conversation will benefit your well-being and even your productivity. You will return to your office refreshed, and you will have had the opportunity to expand your network of supportive peers.
Registration with a commitment to attend all five sessions will result in the Center for the Advancement of Well-Being providing a free copy of the book to the first 20 registrants. While we hope to welcome more than 20 participants, books will only be provided to the first 20.
Your Fairfax Campus facilitators will be Katie Clare and Julia Morelli.
