LATE AUGUST IMMERSION & ONLINE COURSE

INTS 475-010 “Self-Care & Well-Being for the Helping Professional” with Mark Thurston. HYBRID course. This is a three-day classroom intensive Thursday, August 23 through Saturday, August 25, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. The course continues with online learning modules that extend across the entire fall semester. This course is designed to better prepare students to meet a distinct set of challenges facing professionals in careers that involve directly helping others. Students will study research findings about factors such as stress, burnout, and compassion-fatigue that undermine professional success and longevity in these career fields. Students will examine and engage in practices such as self-care and mind-training (mindfulness). Research evidence suggests that those in the helping professions can be proactive in mitigating and even preventing the occurrence of career-related burnout by adopting self-care and mindfulness practices. This course will equip students with information, skills and exercises that cultivate well-being, resilience and meaning in their chosen careers. (3 credits)

 

REGULAR SEMESTER-LENGTH COURSES

INTS 475-012  “Strategies for Personal and Organization Well-Being in Turbulent Times” with Flynn Bucy. Five Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.: September 8 and 29, October 20, November 10, and December 1. This course explores promising strategies for personal and organizational adaptability and resilience in an era where unsustainable economic, environmental and social trends are reaching tipping points that are resulting in significance turbulence. Advancing the range of factors affecting well-being is a challenge in the best of times. These challenges are compounded in turbulent times and require additional strategies for not only coping but thriving. The course will study recent research findings and factors driving more rapid and interdependent changes in our global village. Most of the course will be dedicated to discussing and applying a series of specific well-being strategies and practices for both individuals and organizations. (3 credits)

INTS 395-015  “Mindful Leadership” with Stacey Guenther.  Fridays, 10:30 a.m. to 1:10 pm. This experiential course brings together two areas: 1. The practice and outcomes of mindfulness and meditation practice, and 2. Modern leadership theory and practice. Students will have the opportunity to learn about and practice mindfulness meditation and explore their own leadership beginning with values, meaning, purpose, and true self. Theoretical models will include authentic, primal, conscious, spiritual, transformational, and other ethics-based ways of viewing leadership, which will be viewed using a critical thinking lens. The course will explore leading change, and students will be invited into deep personal work around their resistance to change as viewed through Kegan’s “Immunity to Change” process. Students should expect personal developmental work combined with practice and theoretical application. They should also expect to spend time in class and on their own meditating. (3 credits)

INTS 355-001 and -002 “Mindfulness, Meaning and Well-Being” with Mark Thurston. Two sections: Section 001 meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 pm. Section 002 meets Tuesday and Thursdays 10:30  a.m. to 11:45 a.m.  This is an introductory course to the study of consciousness, mindfulness, and the science of well-being. It is a required course for the undergraduate minor in well-being, but it is open to any student. We will study the science of human consciousness, learn basic methods of meditation and how to find meaning in a dream, explore the factors that help us find happiness and meaning in life, and conduct a personal vision quest related to recognizing one’s own life purpose. (3 credits)

INTS 356-001  “Well-Being and Resilience” with Nance Lucas.  Tuesdays from 1:30 p.m. to 4:10 pm. Students will explore the many ways in which resilience can be learned and developed on individual, community, and organizational levels, and how resilience promotes growth and restores efficacy and agency, leading to higher levels of flourishing. This course is designed to engage students’ learning through exposure to the growing literature and research on well-being and resilience, combined with tools used to facilitate resilience in individual and group contexts. Students will learn how to apply concepts related to resilience and well-being to all types of careers and in all dimensions of life. (3 credits)

INTS 395-017 “Mindfulness, Movement, and Compassion” with Suzie Carmack. Thursdays from  7:20 p.m. to 10 p.m. This course examines ways that yoga, movement, mindfulness and compassion techniques can be brought into pre-k, k through 12, as well as university classrooms. Students will explore research illustrating the impact of these techniques on teacher well-being, classroom learning outcomes and student engagement; practice these techniques weekly in class; and work in teams to choose and share one of these techniques with a local school classroom as a “well-being mentor.” Students will then present findings from the field study in a final presentation, and contribute to a community-based participatory research project. (3 credits)

MUSI 455-001  “Music As a Healing Art”  with Glenn Smith.  Mondays from 7:20 p.m. to 10 p.m. This course studies the relationship between musical vibrations and the natural rhythms of the body. Topics include the history of music and healing, sound theory, cymatics, toning, and a survey of vibrational healing modalities and theories. Students will: 1. learn how musical vibrations affect the body, mind, and spirit,  2. discover how and why sound is a powerful source for healing, 3. find out how the  physical body is made from sound and how sound affects physical matter (cymatics), and 4. make a clear distinction between healing and curing. (3 credits) 

GCH 325-001 “Stress and Well-Being” with instructor TBA. Dates and times TBA. This is an online, asynchronous course which explores the influences of stress on population-based health issues. It explores the causes and pathways of the stress experience from an ecological public health perspective. The course also considers theoretical aspects of stress and coping, along with methods for relieving and preventing the stress response in both individuals and communities. This is a required course for the new well-being minor. (3 credits)

PSYC 417-001 “Science of Well-Being” with instructor TBA.  Mondays and Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 4:15 pm. What contributes to satisfying, engaging, and meaningful living? What conditions allow people to flourish? We address these questions by examining and interpreting the latest research in psychology and neuroscience on well-being, character strengths, social relationships, and societies. (3 credits)
