Dr. Li-Mei Chen is a gerontologist at George Mason University College of Public Health Department of Social Work. She received her degrees from Bryn Mawr College, University of Michigan, and Columbia University. Prior to joining George Mason, Li-Mei worked in graduate schools in the US for 4 years and 16 years in Japan. Her current research interest is in the role of civic engagement of older racial and ethnic minorities in solving loneliness and social isolation, and expanding that knowledge to further investigate how relational engagement can be socially prescribed for older adult’s health, mental health, and well-being. She is also passionate about workforce development and is currently testing VR technology for dementia care training with frontline care workers.

Focusing on diverse aging populations and their care partners, my work emphasizes interdisciplinary, community-based, and creative approaches to addressing complex societal issues and enhancing quality of life. Current projects include Rhythm & Nature and other arts- and music-based interventions that support well-being among individuals living with dementia and their care partners and individuals from underserved communities.
