Joel Martin

Joel Martin, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the School of Kinesiology at George Mason University and a faculty member of the Sports Medicine Assessment Research Testing (SMART) Laboratory. His research focuses on improving the health, performance, and operational readiness of tactical athlete populations, including firefighters, law enforcement, and military personnel. With a background in biomechanics and neuromuscular function, Dr. Martin applies a holistic health framework that integrates physical, physiological, and psychological domains to address the complex challenges these populations face. His projects also explore biomarkers and determinants of operational readiness, bridging laboratory-based research with real-world applications. Dr. Martin has ongoing collaborations with George Mason University ROTC, the Army National Guard’s Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F) initiative, local fire departments, and federal law enforcement agencies. He also serves as an active member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and sits on the advisory board for the Tactical Strength and Conditioning Professional Development Group.
