“Nourishing yourself in a way that helps you blossom in the direction you want to go is attainable, and you are worth the effort.” – Deborah Day
We enjoy all four seasons – spring, summer, fall, and winter – at George Mason University. While we pursue well-being practices throughout the year, it’s valuable to take advantage of the distinctive opportunities each season gives us to nurture our well-being. Embracing seasonal well-being is about adapting our well-being routines to align with the changes of each season. The changing seasons offer a natural opportunity to shift our well-being practices and reconnect with the rhythms of nature. Here are well-being practices for different seasons of the year.
Spring Well-Being Practices
Spring is a time of renewal and growth, making it the ideal season to rejuvenate your well-being routines. As the days grow longer and temperatures rise, take advantage of the pleasant weather to engage in outdoor activities. Walking, jogging, biking, or practicing yoga in the fresh air can significantly boost your mood and energy levels. Enjoy the nature around you, focusing on the sights, sounds, and smells of the awakening world. Use this time to set new health goals, whether it’s incorporating more fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet or trying out a new fitness class. Start a new exercise routine or get back to one you enjoyed. You can also use the fresh energy of this season to get organized by spring cleaning your home and decluttering your schedule. At Mason, you can also enjoy Spring into Well-Being, our annual well-being celebration.
Summer Well-Being Practices
Summer is HOT but also filled with energy and exploration. With the academic year on pause, use the summer break to explore new hobbies and activities that promote relaxation and joy. Whether it’s taking a trip, taking on a professional development, or spending time at the pool, summer offers many opportunities to recharge. Don’t forget to protect stay hydrated during your outdoor adventures. Soak up the sun safely by spending some time outdoors in the mornings or evenings – wearing sunscreen – to enjoy sunshine that boosts vitamin D production, which is essential for mood and bone health. Summer is often a time for outdoor gatherings. Make the most of it by connecting with loved ones, strengthening your social support system.
Fall Well-Being Practices
As the leaves change color and the air turns crisp, fall is a time for reflection and balance. The start of a new academic year can be stressful, so it’s important to find ways to manage this transition. Incorporate mindfulness practices such as meditation or journaling into your daily routine to stay grounded. Mason’s Center for the Advancement of Well-Being offers Intro to Mindfulness sessions. Also, as the weather cools, shift your exercise routine to include indoor activities like strength training or dance classes to keep your body active. Fall is a season of abundance. Practice gratitude for the good things in your life. Enjoy the harvest by incorporating seasonal produce into your diet. As the days shorten, create a cozy self-care haven at home. Light candles, read a book, or listen to music you enjoy. Prioritize relaxation to reduce your stress during this busy time of year.
Winter Well-Being Practices
Winter invites us to slow down and prioritize rest and restoration. The shorter days and colder weather can sometimes lead to a decrease in energy and motivation. Overcome this by creating a cozy, comforting environment at home or in your dorm room. Practice self-care by reading, enjoying a warm beverage, or taking a relaxing bath. Ensure you do things that will uplift you and makes you feel well. Eat warming foods and prioritize restorative sleep. The slower pace of winter makes it a great time to reflect. Enjoy reflective practices such as prayer, meditation, and journaling in ways that are most meaningful for you.
The key is to find practices that resonate with you and adapt them to your specific needs and preferences throughout the year. By embracing the seasonal shifts, you can create a well-being routine that thrives alongside nature’s changing seasons.
Year-Round Well-Being Practices
There are consistent practices that can support your well-being all year long. Some of those practices include:
- Stay Connected: Building and maintaining strong relationships is crucial for emotional health. Whether it’s joining a student organization, participating in group activities, or simply staying in touch with friends and family, staying connected can provide a solid support system.
- Manage Stress: Effective stress management techniques, such as deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, and regular physical activity, can help mitigate the impact of stress on your body and mind.
- Seek Support: Don’t hesitate to seek professional support if needed. George Mason University offers a range of services to support your mental health, including Counseling and Psychological Services and TimelyCare.
- Healthy Eating: A balanced diet rich in nutrients fuels your body and mind. Make a habit of choosing wholesome foods and staying hydrated throughout the day.
- Physical Activity: Regular physical activity is essential for overall well-being. Find an exercise routine that you enjoy and can stick with throughout the year, adapting it to fit seasonal changes.
By making small, seasonal adjustments and embracing consistent, year-round practices, you can cultivate a lifestyle of well-being that adapts to the flow of the seasons. Every season offers unique opportunities to check in with ourselves, make necessary adjustments, and continue growing toward a healthier, more balanced life. At Mason and beyond, let’s make well-being a priority every day of the year.
